Every Sandburg game got better and better as the shortened season progressed! These Wildcats all improved as soccer players and as teammates! To start as a team that barely knew each other, to a team of 17 friends that could trust each other, laugh with each other, and grow as a group in just 6 weeks, is quite impressive. Coach Schmidt is incredibly proud of their efforts. Shout out to the entire team and he hopes to see you at intramurals this year and tryouts next year!

The 6th and 7th grade Jaguars had a season to be celebrated with pride! A team mostly made up of 6th graders ended the season with 3 wins, 1 tie, and 2 losses. The season is over, but the memories will last a lifetime. Our practices helped students improve soccer skills and develop a strong sense of teamwork. These players demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship and always treated their opponents with kindness and respect. Ten of our 16 players scored goals and teammates supported each other on and off the field. Coach Kennedy and our TJ community couldn’t be prouder of our first ever TJMS 6th/7th grade boys soccer team. Go, Jaguars!

These 7th and 8th grade boys played hard during the first boys soccer season at TJMS. The boys battled en route to a final record of 4-2. They worked hard as a team and represented our school with pride and respect. These boys were leaders for the younger TJMS players. They enjoyed competitive practices, working together so that 13 of our 17 players scored goals (we really wanted everyone to score!), and fun bus rides to Celtic Park. Congratulations on a great season, Jaguars! —Coach Landerman

The first WRS M.S. 6th/7th-grade team consists of outstanding students who quickly gelled and began playing as one. One element these students shared is that they are all coachable. This was evident on the field as many students could play any position when asked to do so. Most importantly, the athletes made new friends and had fun throughout the season. I want to congratulate these boys for a fantastic regular season with a record of 3 wins, 2 draws, Conference Champs, and 2nd place in the District Tournament.
—Coach Flores
Walter R Sundling Middle School 7-8 Team
What a great season for the Sundling 8th grade Paladin soccer team. Despite a quick start to the season, this group of gentlemen gave it their best effort to end up on top. The team finished in 2nd place in the District 15 tournament. When it came to the district tournament, this group was playing its best soccer. Their willingness to play positions they may not normally play put the team in the best position to succeed and shows how unselfish they were as individuals and as a team.

The 6th/7th had a great season ending with a record of 7-2. Even though the season ended on a tough note, these girls fought hard each and every game. This team comprised mostly 6th graders going up against 7th grade opponents. The coaches are excited to watch these girls grow over the next couple of years.

The 8th grade team had a fun season and made progress each day. Although they may have not won many games, it was not for lack of effort. They laughed, showed heart and tried each and every game. Coach Pederson would like to thank the girls for a fun season. There was great effort and a willingness to learn displayed throughout the season. Good luck in high school.
—Coach Pederson
The PG 7th grade girls had an impressive season, finishing 6-1 overall. They played hard throughout and worked to improve each week. They are hoping to wrap up their successful season with a tournament championship.
—Coach Bruns
Nora M., Mia S., Harper M., Olivia S., Ella K., Ella H., Jacklyn W., Maggie B., Natalia K., Harper S., Mable N.
While a 3-2 record may not appear as overly impressive on paper, this fun-loving group of girls constantly improved as the year went on and definitely caused problems for opponents as the year progressed. These 11 6th graders never complained about often going up against 7th graders or taller & more physically mature opponents; rather, they just wanted to play and continued to work. They also persevered through less than ideal practice conditions with smiles on their faces.
Perhaps the most impressive attribute about this group is what they’ve accomplished in the classroom. With two weeks left in the 1st quarter, these 12 student-athletes have combined for 2 B’s, 2B+’s, and 92 A’s/A+’s. It has been a privilege to get to work with these young ladies, and I’m excited to see all they accomplish down the road.
—Coach Landerman
1-4 Regular season record.
This team showed a tremendous amount of effort this year. Their schedule was difficult and they remained positive and hard-working the entire time.
Thank you for your positive attitude and tremendous effort. It was so fun getting the opportunity to coach you. Your schedule had you compete against 8th-grade A teams every game and you always played your hardest.
I am looking forward to watching you do great things next year. Don’t stop playing basketball! Junior High, High School, Feeder, Rec, or your driveway, keep playing!
Thank you! Coach Hamann

The 7th/8th grade girls basketball team finished a very successful season losing only two games all year. Finishing second place in the conference and in the tournament behind a very tough undefeated Plum Grove team. The Jaguars gave them a very competitive game going into halftime tied and losing by only 6 points. They may have come up a few points short but no one has more heart and hustle than these girls. With five 8th graders and seven 7th graders, these ladies have an exciting future ahead of them. It was my honor to coach them.
—Coach DiGirolamo

The 6/7 team learned a lot and had so much fun this season. The girls worked very hard and always came to play. They grew not only as a team, but also developed some great friendships. Some of the girls had never played basketball before and were able to develop some basic skills and confidence.

Boys TJXC concluded their first season with a successful finish. The IESA Sectionals were held Friday, October 11. The TJXC boys' team finished 5th (7 points away from 3rd!) narrowly missing the chance to qualify as a team. Noah G and Janik P qualified as individuals for IESA State, which is held on 10/19 in Bloomington, Illinois. Good luck to our first ever state representatives from TJMS! At the District Meet this week, both boys' teams brought home hardware by finishing 2nd and once again proved to be strong competitors. This cross country season was filled with many successes and improved times, but most importantly it was a season that involved over 100 students and thus beginning a new tradition of extremely competitive teams in the future.
—Coaches Burns, Eckman, Gardiner, Soenksen, Vanderploeg
Girls TJXC concluded their first season with a successful finish. The IESA Sectionals were held Friday, October 11. The TJXC girls' team finished 9th of 16 teams! At the District Meet, TJXC had a solid showing with both girls' teams (1.5 mile & 2 mile) finishing 3rd at the while posting multiple "personal bests" in their final race. —Coaches Burns, Eckman, Gardiner, Soenksen, Vanderploeg
The 2024 edition of the Long Blue Line wasn’t as long as usual due to a shortened season, but the Paladins who DID come out to run embraced the spirit of competitive racing and respecting the efforts of their opponents. Highlights of the season included racing a brand-new course with the runners and coaches of Thomas Jefferson Middle School, a spirited meet at cross-town rival Winston Campus resulting in our largest collection of personal records, and sending athletes to both the Crusader Invite in Schaumburg and IESA Sectionals in Deer Grove. The Sundling coaches are excited about the core of our 6th & 7th-grade runners and we wish our 8th graders all the best!
—Coaches Blaheta, Fay, Gabriel, Leva, and Schmeling
The Varsity boys were a young team just like the girls with only 1 8th grader racing at the sectional and the rest only in 7th grade.
—Coaches Soto, Gronwick, Reid, Beutow, Ruta
The varsity girls had one of the most successful years in recent history. They won the 2 mile district championship for the first time since 2018 and placed 11th in a tough sectional. With only 1 8th grader on this team and the rest of the girls being in 6th and 7th grade, the future is bright for this group.

Their positive attitudes and teamwork made this season one of real progress and growth.

Most of these girls returned from a great 7th grade season to lead the squad in the 8th grade. They worked well together, encouraged each other, tried new things, and always brought their enthusiasm to practices and meets.
Coach: Buelow
Plum Grove 8th Grade Boys
We had a good group of returning athletes this year and a few new faces sprinkled in with the changing boundaries. Regardless of previous experience, they led the larger team in attitude and sportsmanship. They all grew as athletes within their chosen specialties, many trying new events and finding new strengths. Many had PR’s at some point in the season and we came away with solid performance as a team and individuals in both the season and at the district meet.

Carl Sandburg 7/8th Grade Team
Almost all of the boys have never played volleyball before. Mrs. Olson is proud of them for stepping out of their comfort zone and trying something new. They brought a positive energy to the court. They worked hard and improved over the course of the season.
Coach: Olson
Winston Campus 7/8 Grade Team
Volleyball is a new sport to our community, so it was great seeing them come out of their comfort zones and give it their all. As a coach I loved seeing the improvements through the season. We went from a team who was barely able to start a rally, to a team who can successfully do a 3 man block. It was a great pleasure working with this group of boys. To my 8th graders I wish them the best of luck with their sports careers and to my 7th graders, time to work even harder next year!

Parent Agreement to Participate
To be read and signed by parent or guardian of the participating student:
I understand that all sports can involve many risks of injury. In consideration of School District 15 permitting my child to participate in either the District 15 Intramural or Interscholastic programs, I agree to hold District 15, its employees, agents, coaches, Board members and volunteers harmless from any and all liability, actions, causes of actions, debts, claims or demands of any kind and nature whatsoever that may arise by, or in connection with the participation of my child in any sport or activity. Emergency Medical Authorization
To be read and signed by parent or guardian of the participating student:
In case of serious injury, I authorize the school to take such emergency action as may be deemed necessary, including the transportation of the student to a hospital or medical center. As a parent and/or guardian, I do herewith authorize the treatment by a qualified and licensed medical doctor of the above named minor in the event of a medical emergency, which, in the opinion of the attending physician, may endanger his/her life, cause disfigurement, physical impairment, or undue discomfort if delayed. The authority is granted only after a reasonable effort has been made to reach me. This authorization is to continue for the current year unless revoked in writing.
Concussion Information
A concussion is a brain injury and all brain injuries are serious. They are caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head, or by a blow to another part of the body with the force transmitted to the head. They can range from mild to severe and can disrupt the way the brain normally works. Even though most concussions are mild, all concussions are potentially serious and may result in complications including prolonged brain damage and death if not recognized and managed properly. In other words, even a “ding” or a bump on the head can be serious. You cannot see a concussion and most sport concussions occur without a loss of consciousness. Signs and symptoms of concussion may show up right after the injury or can take hours or days to fully appear. If your child reports any symptoms of concussion, or if you notice the symptoms or signs of concussion yourself, seek medical attention right away.
Symptoms may include one or more of the following:
- Headaches
- “Pressure in head”
- Nausea or vomiting
- Neck pain
- Balance problems or dizziness
- Blurred, double, or fuzzy vision
- Sensitivity to light or noise
- Feeling sluggish or slowed down
- Feeling foggy or groggy
- Drowsiness
- Change in sleep patternsAmnesia
- “Don’t feel right”
- Fatigue or low energy
- Sadness
- Nervousness or anxiety
- Irritability
- More emotional
- Confusion
- Concentration or memory problems (forgetting game plays)
- Repeating the same question/comment
Signs observed by teammates, parents and coaches include:
- Appears dazed
- Vacant facial expression
- Confused about assignment
- Forgets plays
- Is unsure of game, score, or opponent
- Moves clumsily or displays incoordination
- Answers questions slowly
- Slurred speech
- Shows behavior or personality changes
- Can’t recall events prior to hit
- Can’t recall events after hit
- Seizures or convulsions
- Any change in typical behavior or personality
- Loses consciousness
Adapted from the CDC and the 3rd International Conference on Concussion in Sport Document created 7/1/2011
Students/Athletes with the signs and symptoms of concussion should be removed from play immediately. Continuing to play with the signs and symptoms of a concussion leaves the young student/athlete especially vulnerable to greater injury. There is an increased risk of significant damage from a concussion for a period of time after that concussion occurs, particularly if the student/athlete suffers another concussion before completely recovering from the first one. This can lead to prolonged recovery, or even to severe brain swelling (second impact syndrome) with devastating and even fatal consequences. It is well known that adolescent or teenage students/athletes will often fail to report symptoms of injuries. Concussions are no different. As a result, education of students/athletes, parents, coaches, and administrators is the key to a student’s/athlete’s safety.
If you Think your Child has Suffered a Concussion
Any student/athlete even suspected of suffering a concussion should be removed from the game or practice immediately. No student/athlete may return to activity after an apparent head injury or concussion, regardless of how mild it seems or how quickly symptoms clear, without medical clearance from a physician. Close observation of the student/athlete should continue for several hours. Written documentation must be provided from the evaluating physician upon diagnosis in order to return to learn and to return to play. Also, inform your child’s school (administrators, nurse, classroom teacher, physical education teacher, coach) if you think that your child may have suffered a concussion. Remember, it is better to miss one game than miss the whole season. When in doubt, the student/athlete sits out.
- For current and up-to-date information on concussions, visit the CDC website HEADS UP to Youth Sports page.
- For a video on concussion information, visit the CDC website HEADS UP to Youth Sports: Online Cuncussion Training page.
Students who experience a forceful impact believed to have caused a concussion, who are exhibiting signs, symptoms, or behaviors consistent with a concussion, will be removed from:
- athletic practices,
- competition,
- physical education class,
- recess,
- other physical activities during the school day, or
- in school-sponsored after-school activities.
The student may resume these activities after successful completion of the return-to-play protocol, in addition to a medical release from the licensed physician who has treated the student. Students exhibiting signs, symptoms, or behaviors consistent with a concussion after injury during activities will be immediately removed from these activities. The district’s return-to-learn protocol guides school staff on accommodations needed, including cognitive rest, for students recovering from a concussion.
Code of Conduct Contract
In District 15, we believe that extracurricular activities are an important part of a student's total academic experience and encourage participation. All students are expected to make a commitment to academic success their first priority. The purpose of this contract is to outline the expectations and responsibilities of students participating in extracurricular activities. Participation in D15 extracurricular programs is a privilege. Student athletes participating in the program should maintain an awareness that they are representing not just the school, but their families and community as well.
To participate in extracurricular athletic activities, the guidelines listed below should be followed:
- I will be current with all required coursework and maintain passing grades.
- I will actively display Good Sportsmanship and follow PBIS guidelines throughout the school day, at practices, and at events.
- I will attend all practices unless excused by the coach.
- I will have a current physical on file with the school nurse prior to the first day of tryouts. It is the students' and families' responsibility to check with the school nurse prior to tryouts to make sure the student's physical is on file and up to date.
- I will dress appropriately on all event days as explained by the coach.
- I will respect and follow all directions from the coach, referee, or other supervisors.
- I understand that school attendance is mandatory for at least half the school day on the date of competition or practice. This includes absences due to a doctor's appointment. If I am absent as the result of illness, I understand that I cannot participate. Exceptions are made when attending a funeral.
- To ensure my safety, I understand that if I am unable to participate in Physical Education coursework, then I am also unable to participate in extra-curricular activities that include any physical movement.
- I understand that failure to meet these obligations will result in consequences ranging from student conferences to removal from practices, or removal from the team.
- I agree to participate in extra-curricular activities with adherence to the CCSD15 Code of Conduct.

- Communicate any concerns directly to the coach prior to or after an event—not during an event.
- Maintain good sportsmanship.
Sportsmanship Expectations
According to IESA, the Illinois Elementary School Association, and IHSA, the Illinois High School Association:
“Sportsmanship is playing fair, taking a loss or defeat without complaint, not gloating when winning, and generally treating opponents and officials with courtesy, generosity, and fairness.”
Student athletes, parents, and others attending interscholastic sporting events will:
- Applaud during the introduction of players, coaches, and officials.
- Accept all decisions of officials.
- Treat the competition as a game, not a war.
- Applaud the performance of ALL participants at the end of the contest. Shake hands with the other team.
